Religious Education

Right to withdraw from RE lessons
At Knowleswood Primary School, we are committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes Religious Education (RE) as an important component. RE helps pupils explore a range of beliefs, religions, and worldviews, promoting respect, understanding, and tolerance.
Parents and carers have a legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education, as set out in the Education Act 1996 and the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, and confirmed by Department for Education guidance. This right applies without the need to give a reason.
If you wish to withdraw your child from RE lessons (in whole or in part), please:
- Inform the school in writing of your request.
- The Headteacher may offer an opportunity to discuss the request to ensure clarity and explain the aims of RE, but this is not a requirement.
Important points to note:
- Pupils withdrawn from RE will be supervised, but the school is not required to provide alternative teaching or incur additional costs.
- Withdrawal applies only to RE lessons and collective worship. It does not extend to other curriculum subjects where religious themes may arise (e.g., history or art).
- Pupils will usually remain on school premises during RE lessons.
For further information or to discuss the process, please contact the school office.
